Parties – Steve Aoki @Luxy and Psuedo B-Day Pre-Party @Mine

29 12 2009

Picture taking is all well and good until I run out of battery and get too wasted to take a non-blurry photo.

Here are the pics I stole from Mark the Cobrasnake (who actually reminds me of Terry Richardson without the nakedness and Ron Jeremy without the porn, lol) All pictures stolen from TheCobrasnake Hey Hey Taipei Set.

Ola, Aoki and Audrey = EPIC

YiLing & crew- loves that girl

Justin!!

Met these girls in the bathroom – middle girl’s birthday (turning 17!!) and her friend, right 16! (You ladies are so busted now, but good on ya for being cool enough to come!) I rapped to them when I was so wasted. They were good times!

Fucking MAYHEM. Awesome vibe! So glad I was right at the front of the stage so I could have room to dance and put my bag and drink down.

The flash was motherfucking BRIGHT! Here with my dancing partners Justin, Ross and Alice:

NO electro party in Taipei is complete without SPYKEE! We love you!!

Me staring in AWE (or is that outer space?):

Here’s a few from my house, before we went, taken with my crappy photo skills. Note to self – must buy new camera for birthday present to myself.

Rob, Amanda, Cresencio, and Roland:

Fish face, Amanda and I:

Epic meeting of Peggy (of Peggy Teaches Chinese) and Carrie (of My Several Worlds) at left:

Carrie and Cresencio. My world gets smaller every weekend:

Carrie and I:

My house crew before taxi, including Toby, Masa and John (Carrie’s Hubby)

At Luxy, before camera died and I got blurry.

Jo, of Pet Shops Girl:

Tamin and Crew:

Wicked scarf!

The only semi-good shot of Aoki, fuck the iPhone camera!!

Somebody’s crew at the end of the night outside the Luxy entrance:

NEU! was smart enough to make fans – everyone had them and now hopefully everyone knows about NEU! Go and shop cuz they got the AMAZING gear. So much cool fucking shit.

YAY! What a wicked party! Thanks to Olivia, Audrey, Sway (Dancing Through Sunday), Dim Mak, Steve Aoki, Mark the Cobra Snake and YiLing! So much fun! Epic night and epic party!

Christmas Gourmet Meal with Love from SHANE – Raddest People I Know

29 12 2009

So Christmas was fucking fantastic. Like I said in my Christmas Eve post, friends are the most important people to have around you when you live in a foreign country away from your family. Many friends I know get down around this season, especially cuz most of us work, and are away from home and the ‘spirit’ of Christmas.

Well, Christmas this year at Shane’s changed all that.Great company. Great festive environment. Great food.  I mean, the best meal I’ve ever EVER had in my life on Christmas Day. It was all thanks to the hot hot heart of Shane Murphrey, who took a day off work and spent a pile of money to cook a giant feast for 40 people, with the help of Stef and his favorite girl from home in New Orleans, Erika.

Holy moly. They sure know how to eat in New Orleans. Shane prepared a meal “fit for kings and queens,” said Jeff Rad. Shane is one of the Raddest People I Know.

Love this man!! Thank you thank you thank you SO MUCH for including me. I’m so glad I took him home with me when I found him in ALV so many summers ago!

Now to introduce the feast (if I got anything wrong, or you know how to describe it better, please comment so I can change it.)

Braised Pork:

Cajun Dirty Rice (don’t ask what makes it dirty!) and the Marshmellow Sweet Potatoes (one of my favs!)

Two outstanding dishes: Creamed Spinach (with enough Cheddar cheese to feed a cow, says Erika) and the STAR dish of the night, Pumpkin & Goat Cheese Ravioli in a Green Curry Sauce.

If you like spicy food (or can handle the burning of your mouth) this would’ve been your fav, the Moule (um, chicken breasts in this amazing black sauce – but i dunno how to describe except sensational and spicy)

The 20 Pound turkey (thanks for bringing it Ben! and to everyone who chipped in on it!) That’s the Gumbo poking out on the right in the pot. You know there’s Southerners in the house when…

The second batch of the Marshmellow Sweet Potato holy fucking yummy goodness. Thanks for making 2!

The homemade cranberry jelly on the right, and the Broccoli and Cheddar Quiche on the right. (So fucking yummy too. Vegetarian heaven!)

These two were a little hard to decipher, even when eating. The one of the left is stuffing of some sort (so good!) and the one on the right is Cornbread stuffing (or something like that). Totally amazing and complementary to everything else.

One last shot of the turkey, the Black Pepper Pork (what a hunk of meat that was to cook!) the pot of Moule, and hiding in the back right the best Mac and Cheese I have had in forever – with fresh grated Velveeta Cheese and super thick Macaroni noodles.

Everyone, everyone, ate til they were full and were SO SO SO happy. Shane not only warmed our stomachs with his Christmas meal, but our hearts as well. Not a unhappy face among us! Everyone was into the wine and the laughter and the company. A happy time had by all!

Candids in the night:

I decided to take just a few pics and then put my camera away and enjoy the party. Some things are priceless and worth living with my memory only, instead of all the flash flash bang bang of cameras. This experience was definitely priceless, and we all have Shane to thank for bringing us together.

We also celebrated Austin’s birthday, and he marked the special occasion with a song he wrote and composed. For a beautiful moment, everyone stood around the Christmas tree and listened. Happy Birthday Austin. Wanted to take a pic but deemed it inappropriate to disrupt the intimate scene.

Ended the night at the Saki bar with Billy, Lisa, Stef, Gavin and James. What a great night!

Much love to Shane, Stef, Jeffrey, Erika, Ben and all those I shared the night with! Great to see everyone in such high spirits! x

What Taiwanese Kids Got for Christmas

27 12 2009

Just thought this post might be interesting to some people. I know it’s not about clothes, but it is about what kinda toys are in fashion.

Here’s what my Grade One students got from Santa, after we finished performing our Christmas Play on Christmas Day.

(PS – FU Taiwan for making us work on Christmas Day. We should have a right to our own holiday. Also, FU to my school for making us perform a fucking play on Christmas Day, and do regular lessons in the evening. I don’t wish to work 130-7 on Christmas Day again. That said, we all made the most of it and had fun with our kids.)

Here is the Santa presentation.

I got to sit on Santa’s knee, too! (Who was actually Mr.Awesome, sssh, ahhaha)

I’m pretty thankful a lot of my close friends work with me, so we were able to bitch about working on Christmas together: Lisa, Mel, Emily, Jason, Tommy…. boy were we happy when the end of the day came!

Parties – Christmas Eve

27 12 2009

The holiday season is all about spending time with your family and friends. Most of us living in Taiwan as expats don’t have our families here, so friends become more important. There were so many things going on, that I almost wanted to boycott everything and go home and rest.

So glad I didn’t.

First went to Lisa’s and Billy’s (my old apt, as we lived together with Alita there 4 years ago) to enjoy some specially made MULLED WINE. Thank you for making it Billy, best of the season I’ve tried so far!

Holy Moly it was warm, and so effing delicious. They made the hugest pot:

It was also hella sweet.

Glad to see some friends there too: Stef, Lesley, Mel, Emily, Gavin, James, Dan, Thom, and some guy who I managed to keep engaged in conversation about Spring 2010 collections for half an hour.

Then, at 1030, I should’ve went home. But I couldn’t resist the invite to the Dessert Party at Abe, Biddle, and Armando’s pad.  The store I was supposed to buy liqueur at was already closed, so I had to rock up with only a bottle of wine.

My mind was blown. These boys spent the last 3 days in the kitchen prepping for this party. (Thank you so much for sharing! It was absolutely devine!)

Check out the spread:

Allow me to introduce anti-clockwise from bottom: carrot cake, New York Cheese Cake with strawberry sauce, strawberry chocolate cheese cake, minced pies, and pumpkin pie.

That’s not all…

Two rich chocolate tarts, fresh cream, another pumpkin pie, and an apple pie. Biddle also made some roasted nuts from his great-grandmother’s recipe. Everything was so delicious! Thank you, thank you, thank you!!

We had an entertaining time, especially with Christine, who has the kind of laugh that when she starts laughing, it infects the whole party. It all started with introducing myself as 珍珍, my Chinese name.

Amanda and Cresencio were there to enjoy the desserts with me. I also met some crazy people who told me they were moving back to Winnipeg without a job plan. Big mistake.

Walked home with Amanda and went on a sticker shopping spree for our students in Tong Hua Nightmarket at 2 a.m. hehehe.

Radar – Go Rock Speakers

24 12 2009

Everyone knows the best present is music. But now – a way to play that music – on the cheap – everywhere you go – that is a gift!

Introducing Go Rock – the hottest portable tiny speakers – priced between $300-500NT!! ($10-17US)

The greatest part is that they’re LOUD and chargeable!

Or perhaps because it’s even smaller than a wine stained coffee cup?

I’ll show you how it works. Comes in a pod like above, which is two parts held together by magnets. (Watch those ATM cards, son!)

Here’s the bottom after you take it apart:

Then, you stand them up and push on the top to make them expand:

They each have a cord that comes out of them, like a vacuum cleaner. Pull to come out, pull again and it reels back in.

One cord is to connect one speaker to the other by way of mini-USB. This same cord connects to a regular size USB (looks like a little zipstick) you plug into your computer to charge. The charge lasts up to 6 hours on a 2 hour charge. (Not yet tested fully.)

The other cord is a headphone jack, which you can connect to any portable device with a line out – like your iPhone, iPod, or mp3 player(who even owns one of these anymore?)

The volume control is on the side of the speaker, and each cord has a cover to protect the end. (Cuz if you’ve ever carried a USB in your pocket, you know shit likes to get stuck in there.)

First found by BOB, and given to Mar as a Xmas present. Good Job, Bob. Great find!

You can buy it too – just go to the big Computer Market building (on Civic) and go to the 5th Floor.

Packaging looks like this (Sorry photo’s a little blurry!):

They have a bunch of different ones. All LOUD. Just think of your bicycle or the beach! Or if you’re in high school, public transportation!

Adidas x Star Wars

22 12 2009

Ya heard. Adidas- stencil advert to promote party, new sneakers, and new line? Um did they just watch the second Star Wars Family Guy too?

***NOTE – Check at the Adidas store for the DL and they said that they get the first shipment of the Star Wars sneakers in on Jan 8, 2010. Not all of these will be there, but they’ll be slowly bringing them all in.***

Found it in Dong Qu down the tiniest lane.

Then we walk into some store 20 min later an they got Storm Troopers on the TV. Trend take 763?
Really?

Found the Darth Vader ones online: Here’s a close look at the Darth Vader Adidas sneakers.

I thought about being a journalist and just stating the news without my opinion. But, you come to MY blog for MY take, so I’m telling ya what I think. If you have a different opinion, please blow up the comments or buy the shoes I diss so I can take a picture of you and laugh. I’ll piss myself if someone I know buys the Yodas!

Photos following stolen from The Vine(thanks right click copy save as)

The X-Wing, quite possibly my favs for how mellow they are. I could imagine a cute boy rocking these out:

The Darth Vader ones (ew, seriously? Some 8 year kid might be stoked? Not me, even NB looks better than these, I don’t care if they took elements from the Vader costume and incorporated them into the design. NOT COOL):

The Darth Vader Shell Toe (Which is only ok cuz it’s basically a black shell toe with the Vader logo on the side):

The Princess Leia (I wouldn’t rock it, mostly cuz I couldn’t find something to match, but I think it might look good on a dude in jeans. I do like the hi-top)

The Storm Trooper. I dig the short toe and the extra long tongue, but doesn’t every girl:

The SuperStar Death Star (Yet another Shell Toe, could it be the best selling Adidas ever?):

The Star Wars Micropacer (Micro = small = made for children. I’ve seen this shoe already on the feet of 5 year olds, who don’t even know what Star Wars is. Like maybe SpongeBob has the same style. I only like the silver plate on the bottom)

The Millennium Falcon (…so….. white sneakers with a blue label. Easy sell. Low key. I’d totally buy them just for chillin’. Rain is gonna happen though folks. Or you probably have a friend who steps on new white shoes. Carry an eraser with you to keep them white!)

The Forum Mid At-At. (The big robot things they drive that walk.) I dig the strap across the top. They kinda look like skate shoes, ala Globe, great ankle support. Kick flip anyone?

The SkyWalker (Points for making the SKYwalker a HIGH-top. But ORANGE??? Come on now, if this shoe was any other color – or perhaps a basic color – I think it would sell better than ORANGE. There’s not a lot to be said for words that nothing rhymes with.)

The Fighter (I like it cuz it looks like a jazzed up version of the classic Converse All Star. It would be cool if those side panels were rubber and, instead of printed lines, were actually 3-D like the bottom tread. I would buy them instead of a new pair of Chucks. Adidas, that’s your new selling point? You invented the new Chuck? They even have the circle on the side!):

Last, and least, The Yoda. This style of sneaker is not what Adidas is loved for, and by far the ugliest ones of the collection. I suppose, Yoda is the ugliest main character, so it’s fitting. Doesn’t he wear a burlap potato sack? Is that what they’re made from? FAIL. Leave the people who do this shoe right to making them cuz this one looks like shit. Camo colors? What kinda guy is gonna buy these? Please don’t introduce me.

I know what you’re thinking. Forgetting a few people??

What about the Chewy x Adidas? Would they make them out of fun fur? I’d really like to have some R2D2 metallic ones that actually have a lazer in them, or with a hologram button!! Or maybe metallic gold C3PO ones for Cresencio? Come on Adidas, if you’re gonna do a collab, you better do the whole shebang! Furry little EWOK shoes? Or maybe this season is only Return of the Yedi.

One side of me thinks – ADIDAS – seriously, can you not be more creative? Star Wars came out 33 years ago. It’s over. It’s gimmicky. It’s fucking played out man. There are a thousand rad artists that could make those shoes look awesome and ORIGINAL.

The other side is – OOOOOHHH so you wanna capitalize on a classic to get your millions. Almost everyone I know has seen Star Wars, and it’s made over 4 billion, and that’s just at the box office. I wonder how much profit they have to split with George Lucas? Everyone has a favorite character, and now maybe they wanna get the shoes too. There’s so much HYPE. HYPE = $$$ (well, not always, smarty pants)

It comes down to cool shoes – yes or no? If you get them – which ones do you get? Definitely a conversation starter. (Cuz I’m SO ragging on you if you get the Yoda ones!)

PS – While we’re at it, go read the Wired review of Family Guy’s new Star Wars spoof, Something Something Something Dark Side and try to download it somewhere. I watched it already and it’s great. (So you should too, theoretically.) Stewy is Vader and the Dark Side is Gay. Worth the hunt to watch it.

oh and PPS – They are doing another one in 2010. (Yay!)

Parties – Sat. Dec. 19th

22 12 2009

Craziness for a Saturday. All around the town. Remind me not to start drinking at 6pm!

Went to Mel and Emily’s beautiful rooftop flat for an early Xmas party. Mulled wine, and many good friends!

Nicola, Bob, and Mr. Awesome, repping the RS:

Mr.Awesome is the BBQ man!

Steve-O:

Daniel and Steve-O, kissy kissy. Steve was on tongue alert!

Grizzly, Steve-O, Daniel, and um…..

Winnipeg in the house!

It’s Chicken Time! (but all serious, like CHICKEN TIME!)

Cresencio and I – haven’t got enough of this kid lately! DIY sesh soon, pretty please??

Lisa’s heart is really warm. Like you need mittens to hug her.

The food spread! Including Lisa’s deviled eggs, lots of CHEESE and really yummy wraps (not shown cuz I totally ate them all, sorry guys.)

Jeff and Brian – they are not so into the paparazzi.

I remember this part. It was EXPLODE THE STOVE!

Yay- good pic of Patrick! I’m glad to get a happy one of Gus – guy – you need to smile more!

Mel, I’m trying to fill in the pieces for you. This was right after the earthquake. (Gosh we was wasted early!)

Downstairs, Marika is Lil Miss Organization with her notebook. I say no more.

We left and went to the Saki bar on FuXing and Civic. You, know, the wooden one. Here’s Amy:

ahahahaha…..

Wall at the Saki bar which I later defaced with my Rice Society sticker. I’m soryr, I was drunk. Please forgive me.

As if you didn’t know but Lesley has the bag I want and see everywhere. But she had it first and so it’s hers and she rules.

Tamin, generous man of the evening! Go Check out his Noodle shop – I’ll post something when I finally get there – in DaJhi!

So then we went to Lesley’s new bachelorette pad. I should look a lot more wasted than this:

Lesley, Danny (belated Happy Birthday!), Tamin, and Amy – they being WASTED

Then we went to Luxy, via the 711 in back. Wasted. Yup, but it was the same old shit. Luxy. Ai-ya. Please grow up.

So Luxy sucked so much we went to the Wall. It was Spykee’s warm up for Steve Aoki next weekend (aka my birthday party!!) – cept there was like no one there. Very strange. Ran into Ola, Audrey, YiLing and Jer. Nice surprise.

Rock and Roll (and ahem, electro and indie) are here to stay!

Shopping: IMmense::concept STORE

22 12 2009

So, you know a store is good when you go back to buy more. Lately, my theme has been all black everything. I’m so sick of color. This store I just discovered, IMmense::concept,  has been open for 3-4 months. Most of their stock is black and is from Korea, with the exception of a rack of in house designs.(Equally as cool.) They carry both men and women’s clothing, as well as some accessories.

It’s located in Dong Qu (東區)in the same lane as Chaos Punk – right next door. Their exact address is ZhongXiao East Rd. Sec. 4, Lane 205, Alley 29, #4, 1st floor. If you need it in Chinese it’s 忠孝東路四段205巷29弄4號1樓. Wow are you impressed at my Chinese typing ability? I am!

The outside of the store looks like this:

Even though I asked them to take a picture, I am posting this next one only to help you identify the store. You should really go and buy some stuff there. Good designs. I was suprised at how low the price was, considering how expensive the rent is in Dong Qu.

I went there first last Wednesday and bought a new jacket($3600NT). I had been looking for something in black with a super wide neck. I found it!

I went back on Saturday and bought a sweater(just over $2000NT), some leggings($640NT) and a skirt($980NT). Wore all that on Sat. night.(Plus my new Royal Elastic Hi-Tops!)

I would’ve bought more but I ran out of money. I like the neutral palette, they also carry gray and white.  There were some brighter colors for men, but only a few items. They had a lot of jackets I would’ve bought, had they only been a little longer on the hem and the sleeves. Interesting jackets for men – I was tempted to get some menswear as well. The have some cool rings – like a dead bird skull one I was coveting for around $500NT.

Hard to take photos of black stuff at night. But you all know how great I am at taking photos…. HINT HINT birthday is coming soon!

Maybe it was just cuz I was in Sogo shopping before I came across this shop, but I thought they could’ve easily charged more. I’m glad they didn’t, cuz I wouldn’t have so much new stuff from their store! Thank you for having an awesome buyer! The store people are super chill – they aren’t pushy (thank god, cuz I HATE PUSHY ‘PLEASE LET ME HELP YOU’ sales people) and I kept picking out stuff the girl was wearing. I’ll be back soon to shop again.

But really, I posted this so you can go check out their steez, especially you MEN reading this. You need more cool black things in your life. I notice what you wear. Buy something from here to look cooler!
